Clay Calculator

About This Clay Calculator

This Clay Calculator helps you estimate how much clay you may need for a project. You can use it to plan the amount of clay for one item or a group of items. The results depend on the measurements, clay type, shrinkage rate, and extra clay allowance you enter.

The calculator is free to use and does not require an account.

How the Clay Calculator Works

The calculator uses your measurements and selected settings to estimate the amount of clay needed.

  • Measurements: The size and shape of your item help estimate how much clay it may need.

  • Clay density: Different types of clay can have different weights for the same volume. Use your clay maker's information when available.

  • Shrinkage: Clay can become smaller as it dries and is fired. Enter the shrinkage rate provided for your clay, if available.

  • Extra clay: You can add a percentage to allow for trimming, scraps, and other material that may not become part of the finished item.

These results are estimates, not exact amounts. Actual clay use can vary because of wall thickness, moisture, trimming, and the shape of your item.

Understanding Clay Shrinkage

Clay may shrink as it dries and during firing. The amount depends on the clay body and the firing process.

For example, if a clay item starts at 10 cm and the total shrinkage is 12%, its estimated final length is 8.8 cm.

Use shrinkage information from your clay manufacturer when possible. If you do not know the correct percentage, treat any default value as a rough estimate.

Remember that shrinkage changes an item's size, while moisture loss changes its weight. They are related to the clay-making process, but they are not the same measurement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the Clay Calculator?

The result depends on the information you enter. Correct measurements and reliable clay data can help produce a more useful estimate, but the actual amount may differ.

Can I use this calculator for different types of clay?

You can use it for the clay types and settings supported by the calculator. Clay properties vary by brand and product, so check the manufacturer's information when available.

Why might I need more clay than the calculator estimates?

You may use more clay because of trimming, uneven walls, changes in moisture, spills, or leftover scraps. Adding an extra percentage can help allow for some of these losses.

Should I use the manufacturer's shrinkage rate?

Yes, if the information is available for your particular clay. Shrinkage can vary between clay products and firing conditions, so a general default may not match your results.

Is this calculator suitable for large batches?

It can help you estimate clay needs for several items. For a large project, try making one item first and record how much clay you actually use. That information can help you plan future batches more closely.
