Quilt Square Size Calculator: Find the Right Cutting Measurements
Planning a quilt is easier when you know the correct size and number of fabric pieces to cut. The WebGiz Quilt Square Size Calculator helps you work out finished and unfinished square sizes, estimate fabric needs, count quilt squares, and find cutting measurements for different quilt designs.
Whether you are making a small patchwork project or a larger quilt, this tool brings several useful calculations together in one place. You can enter measurements in inches or centimeters for many of the calculations and use the results to plan your next sewing project.
How the Quilt Square Size Calculator Works
Choose the type of calculation you need, enter your measurements, and click the relevant Calculate button. The tool processes your entries using the formula for that section and displays the results below the input fields. If a required measurement is missing or invalid, it displays an error message so you can correct your entries.
The calculator includes eight tabs: Square Size, Square Count, Fabric Needed, HST, QST, Cutting, Seam Allowance, and Saved. Each tab handles a different part of quilt preparation.
Finished and Unfinished Square Size
This section calculates the unfinished size of a basic quilt square from its finished size and seam allowance. Enter the finished measurement, seam allowance, number of squares, and preferred unit.
For example, if your square should finish at 6 inches and you use a ¼-inch seam allowance, the calculator adds ½ inch to the finished size. The unfinished square should measure 6½ inches before sewing. The results also show the total finished and unfinished square areas for the number of pieces entered.
Quilt Square Count
Use this section to estimate how many squares are needed to cover your planned quilt dimensions. Enter the quilt's width and length, along with the finished width and height of each square.
For example, a quilt measuring 60 by 72 inches, using 6-inch squares, requires 10 squares across and 12 rows down. That gives a total of 120 squares. The calculator rounds the number of squares up when a dimension does not divide evenly, so the planned coverage may be larger than the exact quilt dimensions.
Total Fabric Needed
This section estimates fabric length from the cutting width and height of each piece, the number of pieces, the fabric width, and an extra percentage for waste.
For example, you might need 40 pieces measuring 6½ inches by 6½ inches from fabric that is 42 inches wide. The calculator estimates how many pieces fit across each row, how many rows are needed, and the total fabric length after adding your selected extra percentage.
The result assumes a simple row layout. It does not account for every possible cutting arrangement, fabric patterns, or all cutting losses, so treat it as a planning estimate.
Half-Square Triangle (HST) Calculator
Half-square triangles are quilt units made from two triangular sections that form a square. This section estimates a starting cutting size based on your finished HST size and the selected method.
You can choose the standard method, which adds twice the seam allowance, or the alternative method, which adds ⅞ inch when working in inches. Enter the number of units you need to see the calculation details. Follow the cutting method used by your quilt pattern, as different methods can produce different starting sizes.
Quarter-Square Triangle (QST) Calculator
This section estimates the starting size for quarter-square triangle units. Enter the finished size, seam allowance, and number of units, then choose an extra cutting allowance or the custom seam-allowance formula.
The result shows the calculated starting cut and the method used. Since QST construction methods vary, compare the selected formula with your pattern instructions before cutting fabric.
Cutting Dimensions
The Cutting section calculates a starting measurement for a basic square, half-square triangle, or quarter-square triangle. Select the piece type, enter the finished size and seam allowance, and choose how you want fractions rounded.
Results include decimal and fractional measurements, such as the nearest ⅛, ¹⁄₁₆, or ¹⁄₃₂. This helps when you prefer working with common quilting ruler measurements.
Seam Allowance Calculator
This section shows how seam allowance changes the unfinished size of a square. Choose a listed allowance, such as ¼ inch, or select a custom value. Enter the finished size and unit, then calculate the result.
For a 6-inch finished square with a ¼-inch seam allowance on each side, the unfinished size is 6½ inches. This makes it easier to check your cutting measurements before joining the pieces.
Save, Load, Copy, Print, and Share
The calculator includes practical options for keeping your work organized. Save a calculation in your browser, load a saved calculation, copy the latest results, print your work, or use the Share button to share it when supported by your browser.
The Saved tab lists calculations stored in that browser. Saved entries use local browser storage rather than being sent to WebGiz or an external server. The Light/Dark button changes the calculator's appearance, while Reset returns the fields to their default values after confirmation. Clear and Cancel buttons are also available within the calculation sections.
Example: Planning a Quilt with 6-Inch Squares
Suppose you want to make a quilt that measures 60 by 72 inches using 6-inch finished squares. First, open Square Count and enter the quilt dimensions and square size. The result is 120 squares, arranged in 10 columns and 12 rows.
Next, open Square Size and enter a 6-inch finished size with a ¼-inch seam allowance. The unfinished size is 6½ inches. You can then use the Fabric Needed section to estimate fabric for your required cut pieces, including an extra percentage for waste. These calculations help you plan, but your final fabric needs will depend on your layout and cutting method.
Plan the Rest of Your Quilt

Once you have worked out your squares and cutting measurements, you may also need to estimate fabric for the back of your quilt. Visit the WebGiz Quilt Backing Calculator to help plan the backing fabric for your project.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a finished and unfinished quilt square?
The finished size is the measurement after the square has been sewn into the quilt. The unfinished size includes the fabric needed for the seam allowances.
Can I enter fractions?
Yes. The calculator accepts decimals and fractions such as ¼, 6 ½, or 6.5 when entering measurements.
Can I use centimeters instead of inches?
Yes. The Square Size, Square Count, Fabric Needed, Cutting, and Seam Allowance sections offer a choice between inches and centimeters. The HST and QST sections display their measurements in inches.
Does the calculator tell me exactly how much fabric to buy?
It provides mathematical estimates based on the measurements and formulas used. Actual needs can vary with fabric width, pattern direction, cutting layout, and waste. Check your pattern instructions and allow for your project's specific requirements.
Can I save my calculations for later?
Yes. Use Save and open the Saved tab to access stored calculations in the same browser. Clearing browser storage or changing browsers may make those saved entries unavailable.
